Your cabbage seedlings may look small now, but they’re already laying the foundation for big, firm heads down the road. To grow sturdy and stress-free, they need two things in perfect balance: consistent moisture and strong light.

The Role of Light

Cabbage is a cool-weather crop, but it still needs plenty of sunlight to fuel leafy growth.

  • Aim for 12–14 hours of bright light daily
  • Use south-facing windows or full-spectrum grow lights if indoors
  • Keep grow lights 2–3 inches above seedlings, adjusting as they grow
  • Rotate trays to keep growth even and prevent leaning

Without enough light, seedlings become leggy and weak, struggling to recover even after transplanting.

Watering Seedlings the Right Way

Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes during this phase. Here’s how to avoid it:

  • Water when the top ½ inch of soil feels dry
  • Use a bottom watering tray or a gentle stream at the base to avoid leaf damage
  • Ensure good drainage in your seed trays or pots — soggy roots mean stunted growth
  • Water early in the day so foliage dries before nightfall

Don’t let them dry out completely either — cabbage seedlings are shallow-rooted and need moisture to grow strong leaves and stems.

AiFarming advantage: Set light and watering reminders based on your seedling age and indoor setup. AiFarming adjusts guidance using local weather or indoor light access so your cabbage gets what it needs — when it needs it.
