Green onions also known as scallions should be planted in the soil when the soil can be worked on. Onion require a temperature of 65 to 86 F to germinate. To prevent the weeds from ground around the plant and keep the moisture inside the soil put some mulch around your soil. This will ensure that weeds do not grow near the onion plants.

Onions require at least 1 inch of water per week. Make sure that the soil is not too dry and not too wet. Over watering can cause the plant roots to suffocate and die. Any easy way to test the soil is to stick your finger in it. If you feel that the soil is wet then you are good. If it is completely dry then you need to add more water.
